Ethical Practices – SA8000

Hubb Accessories, as a division of Lygo International fully adheres to the SA8000 Standard in all practises of our business as outlined below.

Social Accountability 8000 (SA8000) has been developed by Social Accountability International (SAI), known until recently as the Council on Economic Priorities Accreditation Agency.

SA8000 is promoted as a voluntary, universal standard for companies interested in auditing and certifying labour practices in their facilities and those of their suppliers and vendors. It is designed for independent third party certification.

SA8000 is based on the principles of international human rights norms as described in International Labour Organisation conventions, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It measures the performance of companies in eight key areas: child labour, forced labour, health and safety, free association and collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours and compensation.

SA8000 also provides for a social accountability management system to demonstrate ongoing conformance with the standard.

Waste Packaging: Producer responsibility obligation (Packaging Waste) regulations 2007

Hubb Accessories, as a division of Lygo International employs the compliance Scheme “Synergy Compliance” to operate our packaging waste obligation.

Businesses that are obligated must go through a data collation exercise in order to discover the weight and type of packaging they supplied or imported in the previous year. Using this information a business can then calculate how many tonnes of PRNs of different material types they are required to purchase in order to fulfil their obligations.

The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Regulations) first came into force in Great Britain in 1997 and in Northern Ireland during 1999. The Regulations require businesses with a turnover greater than £2 million, which supply or import more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year, to register and fulfil an obligation to recover and recycle an amount of packaging waste.

WEEE: Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2002/96/EC

Hubb Accessories, as a division of Lygo International employs the compliance Scheme “we3 compliance” to ensure Hubb Accessories correct compliance with the WEEE regulations.

EU legislation restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electric equipment (Directive 2002/95/EC) and promoting the collection and recycling of such equipment (Directive 2002/96/EC) has been in force since February 2003. The legislation provides for the creation of collection schemes where consumers return their used e-waste free of charge. The objective of these schemes is to increase the recycling and/or re-use of such products. It also requires heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium and flame-retardants such as polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) to be substituted by safer alternatives.

Batteries: The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009

Hubb Accessories, as a division of Lygo International employs the compliance scheme Budget Pack to ensure correct compliance with the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulation 2009.

Batteries contain certain potential hazardous material such as mercury, lead, cadmium, zinc, copper nickel, manganese and lithium yet only about 3% of portable batteries are recycled.

To reduce the harmful effect of batteries on the environment, The Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators Directive was issued by The European Commission on 6th September 2006.

The Directive requires member states to limit the use of certain materials in batteries and achieve minimum collection and recycling targets for waste batteries. The Directives policies were implemented into UK law by the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008 (effective from 26th September 2008) and the Waste Battery and Accumulator Regulations 2009 (effective from 5th May 2009).

Green Dot: Eco Emballage - handle our packaging waste in France.

Much like the packaging waste regulations 2007 previously mentioned Hubb Accessories also use companies like Eco Emballage in France to handle packaging waste across Europe. The Green dot mark shown on packaging signifies compliance.
